A more advanced application of this concept can be found in the aerospace industry. Beginning in the 1980s, passenger and military airplanes were equipped with high tech systems that provided digital guidance. Pilots have input, but the systems substantially increase safety by automating many tasks and cutting down on pilot error. Multiple levels of redundancy are built into these systems.

Automobile accidents are currently the leading cause of death in some demographic segments, and any way to decrease driver error and therefore increase safety is something that could prove to be very valuable. Many believe that vehicle guidance systems have the potential to do just that.
